Actually there's no much sense in adding support for SVN pre-commit hooks, since these hooks print anything only when hooks exits with an error.

When trying to setup subgit sync between Atlassian Stash repo and a remote subversion repository using EAP 2.0 (latest) I get the following output, this happens for a GIT repository where the import has been succesfully done through the stash interface as well as when creating a empty git repository using the Stash interface and then manually installing Subgit:

Accordingly to the information provided by the user, noop modification is shown when svn protocol is used, Subversion server is 1.6.3.

Currently SubGit uses default system encoding to read authors.txt file. The advantage of this approach is that any default editor can be used to edit authors.txt without file corruption problems (if the file is in UTF-8, after pressing Ctrl+S some letter may turn to '????' forever).

SubGit could use always UTF-8 for authors.txt file instead. The advantages are: a possibility to transmit the file between the system with whatever system encoding (though without a possibility to edit the file).

Another approach is to specify encoding in the file header like Python does. If there's no header, system encoding could be used (to be compatible with RC{1,2}). The drawback of this approach — some complexity and maybe people could mistype the encoding name or specify unsupported encoding (though it's not very big drawback).

Or maybe we should just add more documentation about encoding to the file header without a possibility to change.

What do you think?

Hi,

We're migrating our SVN projects to git with the help of Subgit for the transition. We have a problem with revisions history, wich is not kept, due certainly to some SVN moves. Here is the configuration.

Before, moving files, we had this kind of tree in SVN :

- Repo

--- trunk
--- branches
---- branche1
-- Plugin2
--- trunk
--- branches

Each plugin had it's own trunk/branches/tags structure. We have moved that into only one project, to simplify our developers life :

- Repo

-- Project
--- trunk
---- Plugin1
---- Plugin2
--- branches
---- 0.1
----- Plugin1
----- Plugin2

In SVN we still have all the history of the moved files, as we've done svn move. But in the git repo synchronised with subgit, we only have the history of commits wich happened after the moves !

This is really problematic as we have 4 years of devs history. Do you have an idea of a config wich could work ? We've tried using 2 differents confs :

pointing directly to /Repo/Project => Git repo is ok, but no history
pointing to /Repo, with a trunk mapping like this : trunk=Project/trunk:refs/head/master => nothing works ("cant' find head" when we try to clone)

One way to do that is to handle special pushes in a special way, like:

$ git push origin --delete refs/subgit/command/fetch-sync
$ git push origin --delete refs/subgit/command/fetch-async

I think this is preferrable. Another option to consider is to add "fetch" command:

$ sugit fetch [--async] GIT_REPOS

There're options: set it to "git" string, to "localhost" string, to local domain if it is possible to determine it.

A SubGit install from a local Git repository to a remove Subversion repo fails for lack of memory, even when I changed the JVM memory allocation to 8192 MB. The host machine has 12 GB of RAM.

The source Git repository includes several commits of a binary file of about 20 MB, and about 77,000 small text files.

SubGit seems to be working well in another instance in a different user account, though I'm surprised at the resource usage: That account is running two instances of the JVM at about 1.3 GB each, and another two at about 400 MB each.

The log .zip is included as the error message requests.

I'm out of ideas. Is there anything I can do?

To reproduce:

$ sudo svnadmin create test
$ subgit install test

Instead it should write the stack traces to the log, and print only a short message to console.

Looks like org.tmatesoft.svn.core.internal.util.DefaultSVNDebugLogger is misconfigured.

It turns out that SubGit 2.0 EAP builds load the whole configuration for every Git repository managed by SubGit, so that takes O(N^3) where N is the number of Git repositories in config file.

We're using JGit library in order to work with Git repositories. It's a known problem of JGit that it searches a single config option for O(L) where L is the number of lines in a config file (including comments). This problem is already fixed in JGit, but the fix affects other parts of SubGit, so we had to roll back this fix for a while.

The whole configuration loading takes O(N * L) where N is the number of Git repositories managed by SubGit; since L ~ 30 * N, it takes O(N^2) to load SubGit config file once.

When user:group runs subgit configure repos and repos files are owned by user2:group, then configure should automatically set core.shared option to 'true'. Appropriate message should be printed out.

When files group differs from user primary group (user:group vs user2:group2), then configure should fail and print out instructions on how to proceed (e.g. change user's primary group to group2).

Testing out subgit 2.0 eap on a fairly large SVN repository, but the subgit install commend failed during "Translating Subversion revisions to Git commits" step.

Any idea from the following log on how to fix?

The scenario:
(short: I create not bare git repository, set a git repo path in subgit.conf to this repository,
then run install 2 times. The first run fails with a strange exception (that actually should not be an internal error), the second one succeeds (that is also strange because I didn't fix anything))

To my opinion SubGit should just show an error (not internal) that it doesn't work with not bare repositories (as I remember it doesn't though SGK has all necessary functionality to work with both bare and not bare repositories).

I currently have two servers:

svn 192.168.16.104
Git 192.168.16.103

Deposits were managed as follows on SVN

Directory modules
Deposits: deposit

Here the tree
module -> depot1-> trunk
                               -> Branches
                               -> Tags

module -> depot2 -> trunk
                                -> Branches
                                -> Tags

When I used subgit EAP 2.0 to install its deposits I had no problem.

I had every HISTORY since the beginning where I created my svn repository except that the problem was that the developers if the developers wanted to work on the same two deposits, they had to clone the two deposits in order to work there.

So what we did:
we create a repository 3
module -> depot3 -> trunk
                 -> Branches
                 -> Tags

And the svn server was moved to deposit 1 and 2 to put in deposit 3 so that developers can clone a repository.

module -> depot3 -> trunk -> depot1
                          -> Depot2


Then we installed subgit EAP 2.0 above this directory and it worked well!

Problem: It was found that the account has lost HISTORY depot1 and depot2 in creating this repository 3
It begins history after moving two deposits in depot3

I would like to retrieve the history from the beginning all.

Maybe I'm wrong, is it possible to recover the history?
And how to configure subgit / config so that it takes into account the history?

I followed exactly http://blog.subgit.com/readonly-subversiongit-mirror-with-subgit-and-svnsync/ using http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/, but while tags/* was mirrored perfectly, tags/release/* was not (see http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/tags/release/ for what it should contain).

I deleted everything and tried mapping tags/release/* directly to tags. Now I get no tags at all.

I then did svnlook –full-path | grep tags/release on the svnsync'd local repository. Turns out it didn't bother synchronising tags/release, and therefore subgit couldn't map what wasn't there.

I have to admit I'm not sure what to do now. Can I feed subgit v2.0 the http://svn.boost.org/svn/boost/ source directly, and if I do will it correctly map tags/release/*? Or is there some way of getting svnsync to behave? Is svnrdump more likely to work?

Im trying to import a non stantard svn repo layout:

in fact, the repo root is the (virtual) trunk

and i'd like to have the same layout on my git master, instead of 3 git repositories.
but subgit force me to give a folder to map trunk
I tryed to use "/", ".", "main" as trunk config... but no way.
(on this line: trunk = trunk:refs/heads/master)

Do you know how to map svn root to trunk and, in consecuence, to git master?

We're using 2.0 EAP and when we have subgit installed on a Stash repo, notifications are no being sent for any events that would trigger them. When I uninstalled subgit from the repo to test my theory, notifications started flowing. I think it has something to do with how you're handling the events post-commit.

Anyway, when I went to install subgit again to sync the repo, I got an error. I'm attaching the zip that subgit made when the error occurred. I got the error twice and it was two different errors.

When I create an annotated tag with a message in my Git repo, pushing that to SVN does not use the message in the corresponding SVN revision. Instead it has a generic "copied to this path from that path at revision X" message.

When adding a source file without an svn:eol-style from the SVN-side, an entry in .gitattriutes with that file being marked with the "-text"-attribute is automatically created. However, when the same file is deleted from the SVN-side, the gitattribute setting does not seem to be deleted. Would it be possible to have SubGit understand that this line was created by SubGit, and delete the line? In our repository, we have a lot of these stale entries, and no easy way of getting rid of them...

I often push out a patch-series to a branch, test it on another machine, rebase it to master, and push it upstream. However, if no other commits were pushed in the mean time, SubGit translates this to mean that into "Replaced branch /trunk from /branches/foo:1234".

I realize that what really happened is ambiguous, but IMO this is taking the path of most-harm. The resulting history has to be viewed with the "Stop on copy/rename"-feature of TortoiseSVN disabled, which can be quite annoying when you want to stop on a real copy or rename, but not those bogus ones.

Currently SubGit tries to synchronize every Git repository specified at config file including those that were not modified by svn commit or git push. As result it generates a significant pressure on the system while synchronizing huge SVN repositories.

In Stash 2.2 we've added pluggable pre- and post-receive hooks: http://blogs.atlassian.com/2013/03/stash-git-hooks-api/

Although you write them as Java plugins, they rely on actual pre- and post-receive scripts in each repo directory. We've had a support case with a customer using Subgit in Stash repos and it seems that it somehow interferes with at least the pre-receive script. Unfortunately we are not sure whether installing, or removing Subgit is causing this (we've seen it after the customer has run subgit remove), but it seems that at some point Stash's pre-receive script is removed, which results in none of the plugin hooks firing.

Our suspicion is that Subgit installs its own pre-receive that overwrites ours - do you think it's likely?

Last week I have installed SubGit 2.0 EAP build #2365 on a Windows 7 Pro machine, cloned a remote SVN repo and successfully tested SubGit with clone, fetch, pull, commit, push etc. It worked for a few iterations, but when I tried again today, it did not work anymore. No error message (at least none I can see), but fetch/pull just do not update anything from upstream SVN anymore. If I update my normal SVN workdir, the upddate works, so my user credentials seem to be okay and I know that there are new revisions to be fetched.

Any hints would be welcome. I am a SubGit newbie. How can I debug this?

We have some changes in SVN which did not got to the master of git, they remain on a very strange state : commits are on refs/svn/attic/trunk/47 but not on refs/svn/root/trunk.

Commit from git seems to unlock the situation but we lost all changes between those SVN commits and the git commit.

Moreover, we have this information from SVN (generated after the git commit) :

It's quite likely I'm doing something totally wrong here and would appreciate some direction.

I've created a writable clone of my production subversion repository at svn://svn/repos/e1

I've used svn2git (https://github.com/nirvdrum/svn2git) to create a git repository from the svn repository above. I've opted to use svn2git as this is a fairly large repository and no other conversion method (including the tmate stash svn importer plugin), completes.

I've pushed the git repository to stash. Using the "Repository System Info Plugin" from Atlassian, I've determined that the repository location for the project I just pushed is at "/opt/git/stash_home/data/repositories/2"

I've downloaded the latest subgit 2.0 EAP (SubGit version 2.0.0-EAP ('Patrick') build #2365)

I'm following the instructions for installing and configuring subgit at (http://subgit.com/eap/)

I've executed the following command

subgit configure --svn-url svn://svn/repos/e1 /opt/git/stash_home/data/repositories/2

I've verified the additional information (users, access and other information specified in the instructions)

I then run

subgit install /opt/git/stash_home/data/repositories/2

I then get this error message

For Java hooks subgit install may generate setenv script that will set JAVA_HOME for a hook script.
C hooks may read directly from the configuration file.

Hook scripts hardcode JAVA_HOME to a particular path taken from System "java.home" property.

It might be that at the moment of installation, system JAVA_HOME points to a symbolic links that is expected to remain stable, while "java.home" system property refers to a concrete path. We need to check this and prefer link (or system JAVA_HOME) over exact path.

Another workaround might be to test JAVA_HOME validity in the hook and fall back to the system or, probably, set of predefined values.

Interval should be defined in repository options (not daemon, as there may be single daemon for many repositories) and probably sent as part of the "fetch" command.
